The Región Oriental, El Este (Eastern Region), forms the populous center of Paraguay and encompasses 14 of the 17 departments and the capital district of Asunción. It lies east of the Paraguay River and occupies approximately 39% of the country's area. Over 95% of Paraguay's population lives in this region.
